Stuart Liddell

For Stuart Liddell, piping is in the blood. His grandfather was the late Pipe Major Ronnie McCallum MBE, piper to the Duke of Argyll, and it was from Ronnie that Stuart had his first lessons, at the age of nine, building the foundations of solid technique and sound repertoire which have become a hallmark of his playing.

Other influences were Arthur Gillies, Jim Henderson and Hugh MacCallum. Stuart’s solo achievements include the Silver Medal at the 1992 Argyllshire Gathering, the Gold Medal at the 2000 Northern Meeting, and the Gold Medal at the 2004 Argyllshire Gathering. More recently Stuart won the Clasp at the Northern Meeting, Inverness in 2007 and 2009, the Bratach Gorm at the Scottish Piping Society of London in 2009 and the Glenfiddich Championship also in 2009. A former member of the ScottishPower Pipe Band for six years, he then played with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band for 11 years, winning 3 World Pipe Band Championships. He is now Pipe Major of the newly promoted to Grade1, Inveraray & District Pipe Band.
