Edelmiro Fernández
EventsWebsite: www.myspace.com/edelmirofernandezBorn in Ribeira (A Coruña – GALIZA) in 1973, he started playing gaita and traditional percussions at the age of 12. From then on he has become one of Galicia’s foremost pipers, winning important galician contests, and international contests such as the Macallan Trophy (Lorient, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2001) and the MacCrimmon Trophy (Lorient, 2007).
He teaches gaita in different schools in Galicia, and collaborates with several galician bands (Laio, Xochilmica…) both in their records and in living performances. Besides, he collaborates regularly with Irish composer Shaun Davey as soloist since 2000, performing in Lorient, Skye, Chicago, Belfast and Dublin, and in the recording of “May We Never Have To Say Goodbye”.
He also plays galician gaita in La Banda Europa (Jim Sutherland), with performances in NewCastle and Falkirk in 2007, and in the Celtic Connections Festival(2008). He’s played in different Folk Festivals, arround the world, (Canada, USA, Philipines, Cuba, Scotland, Bretagne…) He lives at Santiago de Compostela, where he teaches music, and plays with his own traditional band “Laghareu” (Two galician Bagpipes, Snare drum and Bass drum – “skin drums”); with “Taghaitaí” (Galician Bagpipe, Accordion, HurdyGurdy, and Traditional Percussions), and with his folk trio “Tri’Be_Mol” (Galician Bagpipe, Bouzouki, and Accordion).
